coraopolis poetry slam

The first slam was held on January 13th, 2018 at Anchor Anvil Coffee Bar, and it was a rousing success.  The mission is to bring talented, local writers to the Coraopolis area for performance poetry while supporting local artists, art awareness, and literacy awareness.  The first slam was sponsored by local, Coraopolis businesses.

Slam Info

The event is open to anyone who wishes to participate.  Check our website Events menu and Facebook events page for the date of the next slam.

Standard three round elimination.  Participants will be eliminated based on the median score awarded by the judges.  Scoring is per round; no cumulative scoring.  Every participating poet is tasked with composing THREE compelling, four minute poems about social issues, city life, or personal triumphs.

  • Your poem must contain original content.
  • You have four minutes to perform, plus a 30 second grace period.
  • No props, costumes, instruments, etc.
  • Your performance and content will be scored on a 0 - 30 basis. The mean of those scores determines your final score.  No cumulative scoring if you advance to the next round.
  • Tie breakers are determined by audience participation. The audience is encouraged to be vocal about tie-breaking.

Judges will be selected from the audience.  A grand prize will be awarded to the poet with the highest score either through general judging or through tie-breaking.  FREE SPEECH DISCLAIMER!  Poets are not limited in the words they may use for artistic expression.

The next poetry slam is August 11th at 12PM.  For more info or to sign-up, please visit the Facebook event found here.

In order to keep these slams free-and-open to both artists and the local public, future slams will be funded through community contributions.  Any and all contributions made to the slam will go directly towards the grand prize and matched up to $150.  Grand prizes support local artists, while supporting community involvement in the arts.

Contributions may be made any time you visit Raion Zou Holistic Healing or via our online payment platform.  Please be advised that this is not a tax-deductible donation, but that all proceeds go directly to the poetry slam grand prize.
